People asking me to say things in Japanese.
I can speak Japanese and I HATE it when people say, "Oh wow, you can speak Japanese? Say something!!!"

I can't speak Japanese, but I hate it when people ask someone else who can to say something in Japanese.

I still can't believe that Japanese people can really speak Japanese!
— Bob
And I thought I was the only one (I'm a Japanese major and people ask me this all the time).

Why don't you just say something insulting?? This is a perfect softball of a question that you're just watching go by.

Such an annoying thing to have to say something random in a language you know they won't understand anyway, so they can make fun of the way things are pronounced. When someone asks me to say something in my own language, I always say "something".

I tell them to be specific in what they want me to say in Japanese. I could curse them out but knowing kids today they will scream it to the high heavens and end up actually insulting Japanese people when they meet a living, breathing one.

I'm studying chinese and people ask the exact same thing.

this is the reason I switched out of a French major. I'm thinking "If I was an accounting major, would you ask me to count without my fingers and toes?"

This is possibly the most irritating question ever - and as an East Asian Studies major with a minor and focus in Japanese, I get it all the time, too. Usually I respod with "I don't know what to say," which is just long enough to make them stop bothering me.

I took an intensive 4 year program for sign language interpreting(ASL) and people ask me all the time if I can sign something or they say they know sign and give me the middle finger. classy!
