Assuming the receptionist is there to entertain you because she is a captive audience.
Just because someone is stuck behind their desk does not mean they want to hear about your ear infection/thoughts on politics/why you hate cats while you wait.

agree. but it's 'captive' not 'captured'.

Yes, I've been that receptionist.

Changed it.

I'm a receptionist and I totally agree. I hate having to 'entertain' people while they wait and I hate when they just stand there staring at me. Sit down, shut up and don't look at me!!

Try being a receptionist at an old folk's home. The residents families give me their medical histories, life stories, you name it, all in the time it takes for me to look up a room number.

I guess I would ask Fussy and Kate why thy are receptionists if they don't like talking to people and being stared at.

I guess I'd ask Charles to take a look at my job descrition and see if it lists 'listening to people jabber at me while I'm trying to do actual work' in there anywhere. Just because you're not busy doesn't mean I'm not.

I second that, Fussy.

I'm taking an office ed course right now. In my textbook it actually says that it's not the receptionist's job to entertain the client/customer. LOL
